Study Advice

as-salamu `alaykum wa rahmatullah:
I have received numerous request over the years from people asking for advice regarding how they should organise their study.
I have advised them all in just about the same way:
Determine how much time you have in which you will study per week.
Once you have determined the number of hours per week, then divide that time in half. Use the first half of that time for memorization and review of Qur'an.
Use the larger portion of the second half, perhaps 30% of the time, for memorization of hadith. If you want to begin with An-Nawawi's 40 Hadith or a similar small collection, that is good. Or, choose Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim. In either case, for western students, they should look for versions of these texts that are vowelized. Those editions printed by Darussalam are like that for the most part. Each of the Six Books may be purchased in one volume, as is the case with the one volume of Sunan at-Tirmidhi which we are using for our class.
